Liz Key
Picture
Liz Key began her career working in education as a TA. Inspired by good quality teachers, she gained her degree and qualified as a teacher, just over 9 years ago. Since then, she has worked at Sharley Park School.  Liz’s roles include; year 3 classroom teacher (but has experience of years 3 to 6) member of SLT, maths coordinator, SLE-maths and lower key stage 2 lead. She also mentors teaching trainees and students. Liz strongly believes that all children should achieve and this is possible through high quality teaching.
Liz has a passion for maths. It is her belief that all children have ability but often not the confidence! She promotes a ‘can do’ approach, especially in the teaching and learning of Maths.  Her motivation stems from her childhood where she often struggled to understand the concepts and so understands from first-hand experience that simply learning the ‘tricks’ without ever really knowing why hinders leaning and confidence. The invaluable skills of visualising, verbalising and reasoning alongside the use of concrete resources and pictorial representation are essential to a deep understanding.
Using lesson study research in her school gave her results and a reason to suggest a trial of mastery maths teaching in year 3 to the head and governing body. After a positive trial year, with successful results, KS1 and LKS2 quickly joined. They have been guided to follow the principles with UKS2 soon to follow.  Sharley Park was recently graded as good and Ofsted commented that leadership of mathematics is particularly effective and the teaching in mathematics is strong, teachers have good subject knowledge and explain ideas carefully and provide a good range of resources to help pupils deepen their understanding of the concepts being taught.
